Product Description

The German-born Karl Schmidt, son of a high-ranking Nazi leaves his past behind, emigrates to America and eventually becomes a police officer. When he meets Sarah Stern, a Jewish journalist and daughter of Eastern European immigrants, they fall in love. Karl now has to deal with his intricate family history. The stumbling block is the story of a journey of discovery across two continents, where they discover family secrets that they would not have dreamed of. Rudi Raab was born eight days after World War II ended in Europe. His father was a Nazi. Julie Freestone was born in 1944 in the Bronx in New York. Her parents were Jewish immigrants. They met as Julie, a journalist, wrote an article and interviewed Rudi, a police officer for it. They live in Richmond, California. In 1950 both lived in Hamburg, eight kilometers apart.
